Abstract

Subject cataloguing, in spite of its expressive historical trajectory in the information organization field, has not received as much attention as descriptive cataloguing, although they are part of the same process. Reviewing the history of cataloguing, a dichotomy can be appreciated between the descriptive process and the subject one; and the first one was emphasized in the developing of codes and interchange formats. Nevertheless, the studies on subject cataloguing are essential to support the creation of information products able to support subject retrieval and, in general, document-based research.

Martinho Oliveira Noemi, Mestranda do Programa de PósGraduação em Ciência da Informação, Faculdade de Filosofia e Ciências, Universidade Estadual Paulista, Brasil

Adjunct Professor at UNESP - Universidade Estadual Paulista, in Marília, SP - Brazil, Department of Information Science, teaching disciplines of Indexing and Abstracts and Alphabetical Documentary Languages in undergraduate course, and Information Organization in graduate course of UNESP Information Science Program. She has carried out research activities in the Documentary Analysis Research Group with the research project named "Reading in Documentary Analysis" as CNPq's fellow since 1993, that has originated several scientific papers. She is the author of the book "PRECIS na língua portuguesa: teoria e prática de indexação / PRECIS in portuguese language: theory and practice of indexing. She has been the Coordinator of Coordenadoria Geral de Bibliotecas da UNESP from April 1999 to January 2005, and consequently member of Comitê Gestor do Consórcio de Biblioteca Eletrônica / Manager Committee of Electronic Library Consortium and of Conselho de Reitores das Universidades Estaduais Paulistas - CRUESP. She received her M.S. and PhD degrees from Escola de Comunicações e Artes - Universidade de São Paulo, in Communication Sciences and her Associate Professor degree from Faculdade de Filosofia e Ciências - UNESP - Câmpus de Marília. Fujita is member of Conselho Editorial de Periódicos Científicos da UNESP / Unesp Scientific Periodicals Editorial Council and of Brazilian Committees of Periodicals in Information Science.

Profesora Adjunt del Departamento de Ciência de la Información de la UNESP – Campus de Marilia; actualmente realizando actividades de docencia em el pré grado com los cursos de Indexación, y Resúmenes de Lenguajes Documentales Alfabéticas; y dando clases em el post grado, dentro de la línea de investigación de Organización de la Información, adjunto al Programa de Ciencia de la Información de la “Organização da Informação” do Programa em Ciência da Informação da UNESP; también ejerciendo actividades de investigación dentro Del Grupo de Investigación “Análisis Documental”.Obtuvo beca de investigación otorgada por el CNPq en 1993 hasta hoy. Publicó diversos artículos. Autora del libro “PRECIS en la lengua portuguesa: teoria y práctica de la indexación”. Actuó, profesionalmente, como Coordenadora de la Cordinación General de Bibliotecas de la UNESP, de Abril de 1999 hasta Enero de 2005. Como consecuencia fué nombrada Miembro del Comité Generador del Consorcio de Biblioteca Electrónica y del Concejo de Rectores de las Universidades Estatales Paulistas (CRUESP). Master y Doctora en Ciencia de la Comunicación por la Escuela de Comunicaciones y Artes de la USP.Actualmente, Libre Docente en Análisis Documental y Lenguajes Documentales Alfabéticos por la Facultad de Filosofía y Ciencias de la UNESP – Campus de Marilia. Participa de Comités Científicos de revistas científicas de Ciencia de la Información en el Brasil.
