Abstract

The situation regarding the publication of printed and digital publisher’s catalogues in public and private publishing houses and related centres world is explored. The publishing catalogues are conceptualized as reference works. A general and specific typology is established as a guideline, considering their contents, format and presentation, the editor or publisher of the edition and the periodicity. An analysis and evaluation of the internal structure and contents is done: authors, titles, subject matters, collections and volumes. Finally, the function and typology of editorial indexes are studied and defined as a result of the process of describing and characterizing documents.
